Artist - David Foldvari

Interview with David Foldvari

- Date of Birth / Nationality

D: 02.Sept.73, British / Hungarian

- When did you begin illustration?

D: I've always drawn, and I began working as an illustrator in the late 90's.

- What have you been doing before become illustrator? And which school did you graduate?

D: Before I started doing this I was just studying illustration at college, I studied in brighton and then at the royal college of art in London.
- What influenced you to be an artist? What are your art roots?

D: I get this question a lot and I never know how to answer it. I never made a conscious decision to become and artist, it's just something I've always done. My roots I guess are in eastern europe, because that's where I'm from and I have a lot of interest in eastern europe culturally.

- What grabs you, and how is that expressed in your work?

D: Another difficult question... generally, whatever bothers me or troubles me makes its' way into my work somehow. If something is on my mind it usually ends up in a piece of work one way or another.
- Where do you get the inspiration?

D: Again, another question that I am asked all the time, and I never have a clever answer for. The truth is, I never really go looking for inspiration because it's just always there anyway, it's not something I think about, I just kind of get on with working and it comes out the way you see it. The only time when inspiration is low is during mornings - I'm not a morning person at all. I like working late at night, normally in the mornings i'm either asleep or doing boring admin stuff, sorting out invoices or bills or whatever.

- How projects (clients) have you done recently?

D: Right now I have a regular weekly illustration in the guardian newspaper for charlie brooker's column, I have a regular monthly spot in arena for which I produce around 4 or 5 images, and apart from that most of my recent work has been editorial. In the last 2 weeks I've done stuff for Maxim USA, Simon & Schuster, I'm in the middle of working on around 12 images for a magazine called the creator and I'm also in the middle of preparing stuff for a show I'm having in switzerland on may 16th.

- Which artist are you most influenced by?

D: Generally eastern european design and illustration from the 60s, 70's.

- What are you interested in or what is your favourite thing except art?

D: Music, I spend a lot of time making music too.

- Do you think you will still be artist after 10 years?

D: I have no idea. 10 years is a long time, i'm not even sure what i'm doing this afternoon.

- How do you want to carry on your work in future?

D: As long as I evolve I will keep doing it.

- Message for reader please.

D: Thanks for being interested in my work. For anyone starting out as an illustrator - the most important thing is originality. Don't copy others, it's lame.
